Stop Chasing Horses, Start Forging Unicorns

That is not a metaphor Dee Armstrong uses lightly. It is the operating system behind everything she is building right now, and it is the first thing you need to know about her before anything else.

DEE ARMSTRONG

Founder and Chief Unicorn Forger, PINK Unicorn Ventures

A rule breaker who walked away from a thriving company to build a business ecosystem entirely on her own terms.

THE STORY

Dee grew up an only child with a front row seat to two very different kinds of hustle: her mom’s hair salon and her dad’s accounting office. “I watched them build businesses from scratch and learned early on that logic and imagination are the ultimate partners,” she said. “Having a front row seat to their incredible hustle planted the seed that I did not have to follow the rules. I could just write my own.”

For years, she followed a different path first. She built ECHO Project Management Group, a medical research recruiting firm born from watching people she loved face serious mental illness and early onset Alzheimer’s. It was mission driven, it was successful, and it also came wrapped in the kind of corporate red tape that eventually wore her down.

“The moment I decided to actively transition out of ECHO… I realized I was running a highly successful company but feeling completely drained by the corporate red tape,” she said. “Handing the reins to a trusted employee so I could pivot completely into PINK Unicorn Ventures was terrifying but entirely liberating. It taught me that walking away from a success to build something that actually sets your soul on fire is the ultimate power move.”

That pivot is now PINK Unicorn Ventures, a human centered venture studio launching two brands this year alone. The first, abstractdai, is her art and upcycled fashion label, where she is finally painting and creating every single day. The second, BarterMade, is a Freeconomy trade platform built on a simple, radical belief: value does not require a price tag.

“For years I poured all my energy into amplifying other people’s voices and working within the exhausting clinical research machine,” Dee said. “I reached a point where I wanted my own creative voice to be the loudest one in the room. Plus, as an only child, my biggest priority is making real, uninterrupted memories with my parents. I am building this ecosystem so I can step back from the nonstop hustle and live entirely on my own terms.”

HER PERSPECTIVE

“You can absolutely build disruptive, massive brands while wearing hot pink, laughing loud, and refusing to check your authenticity at the door. We desperately need to bring the glitter back to business.”

Dee is candid about how she learned to protect her own time and energy, and it did not come easy. “I learned the hard way that saying yes to everything is a one way ticket to burnout,” she said. “For years, I poured all my energy into amplifying everyone else, hustling nonstop, and running on absolutely empty. I finally realized that you cannot build an empire if you are too exhausted to enjoy it. The toughest but best lesson I ever learned was how to build an impenetrable fortress around my time, trust my team to handle the heavy lifting, and fiercely protect my creative energy.”

Her daily anchor is exactly what you would expect from someone who calls her brand Caffeinated Candor: “Coffee. Lots of it. I am an early riser, so my mornings are completely sacred. Grabbing that first cup of coffee and having uninterrupted time to think, paint in my art studio, or just sit in the quiet before the world wakes up is how I protect my peace and stay creatively grounded.”

THE WORK NOW

Building an ecosystem this ambitious means constantly working around systems that were not built for it. “Navigating the ridiculous amount of corporate red tape and gatekeeping out there. We are constantly having to bypass outdated systems to build what we are building,” she said, “but honestly, dismantling those roadblocks is part of the fun. And oh how I love fun.”

What she enjoys most is handing other women the tools to skip that same runaround. “I enjoy supporting others by handing them the cheat codes they need to bypass red tape and build things on their own terms,” she said. “I am not here for basic coaching or hand holding. I am here to share the raw, unfiltered lessons I have learned from building and selling companies, so other women can skip the corporate runarounds and get straight to building their own unicorns.”

WHAT’S NEXT

Dee’s goals for the year ahead are big by design: successfully launching abstractdai and BarterMade, building the foundation for a 2027 expansion that includes a future forward living community called Roamstead Ranch, and establishing PINK Unicorn Ventures as, in her words, the ultimate disruptive parent studio that proves you can build massive, human centric companies entirely on your own terms.

MEET DEE

Dee is looking for the rule breakers. “Connect me with visionary founders who are entirely exhausted by the traditional path and the always hustling narrative,” she said. “I want to meet the rebels who are actively building alternative systems, forging off grid communities, and creating disruptive ecosystems that give power back to the people.” She thrives around alternative economies, venture studios building human centric brands, and anyone focused on sovereign living and out of the box problem solving.

She is here for high impact, zero friction networking, so do not overthink the introduction. Just bring the good coffee and a ton of creamer.
