“You have cancer.”
That sentence — spoken once, then three more times over the years that followed — is the moment Charlotte “Char” Murphy still points to when she tells her story. Not because it broke her. Because it’s where everything else began.
CHAR MURPHY
Founder, Mission Hope & Believeinspire
A retired attorney who traded courtrooms for a global storytelling movement — and who has survived enough to know exactly what it’s worth.
THE STORY
Long before Mission Hope existed, Char was building a different kind of life — one shaped early by a harsh, abusive childhood she had to find her own way through. She built a career as an attorney. She built resilience, because she had no choice. And then, four separate times, she heard the same two words that would eventually become the hinge her whole mission turned on.
“The very moment I was told, ‘You have cancer,’” she said, is the one she’ll never forget. A four-time breast cancer and bilateral mastectomy survivor, Char has also rebuilt her life after losing everything — more than once. What could have been the end of her story became, instead, the reason she started telling it.
“I have survived and thrived through many painful and debilitating circumstances in my life,” she said. “Because of this, I am determined always to face life and its trials and tribulations with a smile and a positive attitude. My motto is: no matter what happens in life, you can always choose to come through it and be better, stronger, and more confident than you were before. Use what you have learned to inspire, uplift, and encourage others. Keep going and never give up.”
The spark for Mission Hope came from watching others do exactly that. “Witnessing successful speakers and authors share their stories of overcoming serious adversity and the power to transform lives inspired me,” Char said. What started as her own memoir — Unshakeable Power: Through Seasons of the Soul — grew into something bigger: a global storytelling movement, a six-book anthology series, and a community of authors and leaders committed to sharing the voices that most people are taught to keep quiet.
“This work matters to me because I’m helping others turn their pain into their divine, God-given purpose,” she said. “It wasn’t given to destroy you. Everyone has a story that can help someone else. It’s the ripple effect.”
HER PERSPECTIVE
“Know your worth and never accept less than what you truly deserve.”
That’s the lesson Char says she learned the hard way — and it shows up everywhere in how she now leads Mission Hope. The biggest misconception she runs into in her work, she says, is a simple one: “People do not understand the power in their personal story, and sharing it.” Her daily anchor, unsurprisingly, is quiet rather than loud: meditation and prayer.
THE WORK NOW
Mission Hope isn’t short on momentum, but it is, Char says candidly, short on runway. “Fundraising. I need the ability to do more with Mission Hope. I feel limited due to a lack of financing,” she said. It’s the one obstacle standing between the movement she’s built and the scale she knows it’s capable of.
What keeps her going is the same thing that started it: the people on the other side of the work. “Guiding and coaching through hardship, and sharing their stories to help others” is how she describes what she finds most fulfilling — turning her own hardest chapters into a framework other people can use to write theirs.
WHAT’S NEXT
Char’s goals for the year ahead are specific and ambitious: growing Mission Hope beyond a writing platform into a bigger stage for speaking opportunities, sharpening her own speaking skills, and — top of the list — raising the funding, sponsorships, and financial support the mission needs to expand its reach. “Making a bigger impact,” as she puts it.
MEET CHAR
Char joined IAW hoping to build more relationships through genuine connection — “with people who want to make an impact,” she said — and she’s especially looking to meet women who want to share their own story: founders, executive coaches, successful entrepreneurs, high-level consultants, and women investing in legacy, visibility, and meaningful impact. She’s also actively seeking leaders and executives interested in contributing to the Mission Hope Anthology, as well as benefactors, patrons, and sponsors who want to help fund the mission’s next chapter.
If that’s you, don’t wait for an introduction.

“I’m honored and very grateful,” Char said, of being featured. The truth is, IAW is lucky to have a story like hers in the room.
