Featured Member: Kim Blake – Where Creativity Meets Strategy in the Digital World

Some people choose between creativity and logic.
Kim Blake built a career mastering both.

As the founder of Alpha Webworks, Kim helps nonprofits and small businesses create beautiful, modern, and user-friendly websites that don’t just look good—but work. Through WordPress design, SEO-focused improvements, Shopify and Squarespace customization, and ongoing website care, Kim brings clarity to what often feels like an overwhelming digital landscape.

Her work is rooted in alignment: aligning design with mission, technology with usability, and websites with the real goals of the organizations they serve.

A Career Built at the Intersection of Left Brain and Right Brain

Kim’s journey into web design began with a strong creative foundation. After earning her Bachelor of Science in Graphic Design from Woodbury University, she started her career working with small businesses throughout San Diego. Over time, she moved into corporate roles as a web developer—gaining deep technical experience along the way.

But something never quite fit.

“I always felt like I was navigating between being a creative and a logical thinker,” Kim shares. “My left brain and right brain are pretty well balanced.”

That realization came into sharp focus in 2007, as Kim prepared for a holiday trip to Italy. Standing on the edge of a new year—and a new chapter—she asked herself a powerful question: Why not combine everything I know and build something of my own?

She quit her corporate job.
And when she returned from vacation, Alpha Webworks was born.

Turning Tech Stress Into Confidence

Today, Kim specializes in helping organizations move from frustration to confidence when it comes to their online presence. Her services include:

  • Website audits and redesigns
  • WordPress development and SEO improvements
  • Shopify and Squarespace setup and customization
  • Hosting and DNS troubleshooting
  • Email campaigns and automations
  • Ongoing website care and growth plans

One of her signature strengths is creating Discovery & Strategy blueprints, ensuring that every website she builds reflects a client’s messaging, mission, and long-term goals.

“The most challenging part of my work is balancing the creative and technical sides,” Kim explains. “One day I’m designing layouts, and the next I’m troubleshooting code or hosting issues.”

But that challenge is also what fuels her passion.

“There’s something incredibly rewarding about taking someone from feeling stressed about their website to feeling proud of it—knowing it finally supports their goals and helps them thrive online.”

Advice for Women Navigating Complex, Fast-Changing Industries

As a thought leader in web design and digital strategy, Kim offers refreshingly grounded advice—especially for women who feel pressure to have all the answers.

“It’s perfectly okay to admit when you’re not sure about something,” she says. “Technology moves fast, and no one knows everything.”

Instead of pretending, Kim encourages honesty and collaboration:

  • ‘I don’t know, but I’d be happy to find out.’
  • ‘I know someone who can help with that.’

“Being honest shows authenticity,” she adds. “It builds trust and shows your willingness to find solutions that truly support your clients.”

What’s Next for Kim and Alpha Webworks

Like many creatives, Kim’s goals evolve as inspiration strikes. Right now, her focus is on refreshing her brand and rebuilding her own website to reflect how Alpha Webworks has grown.

“It’s about clarity,” she shares. “Refining my services, presenting my work clearly, and creating space for the bigger ideas I want to pursue next.”

That mindset—small, intentional steps that compound over time—aligns perfectly with a book she keeps coming back to: Atomic Habits by James Clear.

“The idea that small, meaningful changes can add up to big results really resonates with me, both personally and professionally,” Kim says.

The Power of Community Through IAW

For Kim, being part of IAW means knowing she’s not building alone.

“It’s a community where women genuinely want to see each other succeed,” she says. “It encourages growth, celebrates progress, and reminds me that entrepreneurship doesn’t have to be a solo journey.”

Her advice to new members is simple and actionable:

Be proactive.
Reach out. Schedule virtual coffees. Connect beyond your local chapter.

“The more you engage, the more value you’ll find,” she adds.

Gratitude, Mentorship, and Paying It Forward

Kim credits much of her success to the support systems around her—especially her family, friends, and early mentors.

Her mother has been a constant source of encouragement, offering honest, thoughtful advice that pushes Kim to see things from new perspectives. And when Alpha Webworks was just getting started, a fellow small business owner and friend opened doors, made referrals, and shared lessons that helped Kim find her footing.

Those early acts of support shaped how Kim shows up today—with generosity, clarity, and a genuine desire to help others succeed.
