Leading with Confidence, Changing the Conversation | Featuring Lenore Trammell

From a temporary job to a transformative career, Lenore Trammell has carved out a powerful legacy in the manufacturing industry—one rooted in courage, compassion, and a commitment to helping others thrive.

Today, as Chief Compliance Officer and General Counsel at Big River Steel, Lenore is more than a legal and compliance expert—she’s a champion for women and a mentor to the next generation of leaders. Her journey reminds us that sometimes, the most meaningful careers start in unexpected places.

An Unplanned Path, A Powerful Impact

Lenore didn’t plan on a career in manufacturing—she initially took a temporary role while deferring law school. But what started as a short-term opportunity turned into a lasting purpose. Over nearly 11 years with Big River, she’s watched the company—and its people—grow in ways she once only hoped to see.

She lights up when talking about stories like their first receptionist, who blossomed into a vital operations leader, and the ripple effect as children of Big River’s earliest employees now join the company themselves. “That’s the dream,” Lenore shares. “To build something that helps families stay together, that gives people real opportunities right here at home.”

The Challenge—and Reward—of Leading People

For Lenore, the hardest and most fulfilling part of her work is the same: people. “People can be difficult, especially when they’re not at their best,” she says. “But seeing someone grow, knowing you were part of their journey—that’s everything.”

She emphasizes that the vision for Big River has always been about more than steel; it’s about community, opportunity, and legacy.

Advice for Women Navigating Male-Dominated Spaces

Lenore knows what it feels like to be the only woman in the room—and she encourages other women not to let that intimidate them. “Being the ‘only’ can be uncomfortable, but don’t let it convince you that you don’t belong,” she says.

She reminds women that while others may not initially recognize the value they bring, consistent contribution and meaningful impact will change the narrative. “Over time, you move from ‘Why are you here?’ to ‘How did we ever do this without you?’ That’s real change.”

IAW: A Community of Growth and Genuine Connection

IAW has been a powerful force in Lenore’s journey. “The relationships I’ve built here are some of the best I’ve ever had,” she shares. She values how IAW offers not just tools and learning, but real camaraderie and support. “This community sharpens your skills, strengthens your voice, and surrounds you with women who lift each other higher.”

Her advice to new members? “Start where you are. Engage however you can. IAW is a space to build, refine, and test your voice—don’t miss the chance to use it.”

A Life Beyond Business

For Lenore, IAW has created connections that extend beyond professional networking. “That’s what I love about IAW. The relationships go beyond business. You form real bonds, real friendships—and I’m grateful for that.”
