The Importance of Investing in Yourself with Karla Aghedo

This week on IAW’s podcast Unlimited HERizons our host and president, Megan Bozzuto, chatted with a member, Karla Aghedo, about putting your health first to be able to juggle all of life’s responsibilities. After experiencing her own “juggle struggle,” Karla rearranged her life as an attorney after her therapist suggested she take quarterly personal retreats to recharge. From that advice, she founded Houston Wellness Workshops for Women (H3W) which coaches and curates wellness retreats for professional women who want to reclaim their power through wellness.

From her conversation with Megan, Karla shares some of the insight into wellness she learned through her joruney.

Checkin with yourself often

Karla went from a super stressful life as an attorney to owning her own firm and retreat business. She truly took on more than where she was before. However, because of the wellness recovery she had, she can check in with herself three to five times a day and feel a thousand times better. “If there is a challenge, I have a new audience to be annoyed with. To be fair, my husband is still taking the heat in the sense of feeling like my problem. But then you have to learn he’s not your problem, he’s never been your problem. The work is on you, you’ve got to decide how your showing up in the world and it’s nobody’s responsibility but yours,” said Karla.

You need to completely disconnect

Mother’s especially have difficulty leaving family at home when they go on vacation. You’ll get calls from your husband asking where the soccer uniform is, or how you style your daughter’s hair. “We’re in one place physically, but somewhere else mentally trying to manage someone else,” explained Karla. Her advice is that your partner does not need to do everything the same way you do it for it to be accomphlished. “I want to invite women to develop a different purpose and different identity. I am me separate from the way I load the dishwasher, from how I fold the towles, and from how my daughter looks like,” said Karla.
