Angela Marcella’s Advice on How to Say “Yes”

This week on IAW’s podcast Unlimited HERizons our host and president, Megan Bozzuto, chatted with a member, Angela Marcella, about overcoming limitations and saying yes to opportunities in life and business. She currently works with Girl Scouts to help empower young women and is a product manager for Girl Scouts Cookies. Angela loves being a part of a community that gives back to women. She says, “Each day, not only do I learn from my coworkers, I learn so much from our volunteers and the young women that we help to become young entrepreneurs.”

In the podcast, Angela talked about her career journey and all she experienced from taking risks. Here are some things she shared:

Say Yes to Stretch Opportunities

Angela started her career in IT at a help desk. Eventually, her managers saw her potential even though she had no experience with email management. With support from others and her dedication, Angela jumped on the opportunity and excelled. She continued to say yes to stretch opportunities that propelled her to where she is today. “When you’re in the opportunity, you think, ‘oh boy, what did I sign myself up for?’” says Angela. Yet, she suggests jumping in and getting comfortable with risk while “figuring it out, knowing and learning who the right people are in the room to connect with” can support you in the opportunity.

Networking Can Bring Opportunities

Angela did not expect to end up working for Girl Scouts. She followed the opportunities presented to her and connected with those around her. “Networking is very important, I have learned. You never know who knows somebody else, who knows somebody else, etc.,” says Angela. If you are looking to find networking success, IAW hosts networking events all over the globe where professional women can come together and find support. Check out the calendar for upcoming events.

Volunteering

Volunteering is a massive part of Angela’s life. She enjoys serving her community and often finds it leads to new opportunities. For those new to volunteering, Angela’s advice is to research organizations you are interested in or those your friends are involved with already. “I’ve met so many people. I’ve gained the opportunity to expand on my own skill set, and also share the skills I already had within these other volunteer opportunities,” said Angela.
